Chapter: 4-Chapter Four
  • Jamming

Looks like at one time Solas and Agrippa where the same rank.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

Same rank, but Agrippa is Solus’s 2ic, so he’s still the one in charge.

  • Jamming

Relieve him of command in th Klingon Way, Pulse Laser to the Head.

  • kingkillion

i like were this is going but at the same time i don’t, great job

  • Matthew

I am starting to like Solus. He’s got style! You can’t win a war with disobeying soilders.

His lust-for-blood is completely understandable, from a certain point of view. I mean, they are the superior race, physically, and as I understood technically too. And if the Azatoth had a similar term as “manslaughter” then he wouldn’t be considered as one guilty of this crime, just as in our society a hunter is not considered a murderer.

I know this is not the way where You want to take this comic, I hope it is not a problem that I wrote this philosophical sideway:-).

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

Yes, but animals are able to extend their morality to other species. It happens at times in nature, but it is really frequent in our own society where many humans socialize with animals and vice versa.

So while I don’t think it is quite as easy that Azatoth and/or humans would consider other sentients as subservient animals (to hunt, eat, what not), especially if they have war and by implication meets and possibly trade, visits et cetera, it is rather the outstanding characteristics of war that the enemy is often portrayed as “the other”, not really sentient (human) so easier to kill.

[Unfortunately also easier to torture, as we observe for example US war crimes such as water boarding on “neutral ground” as Guantamo et cetera. I hope this comic will avoid that part of war.]

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

“humans socialize with animals” – humans socialize with other animals.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

@Matthew: Its not a problem at all, actually your pretty spot on with your assessment of his character. I think its important to understand the villains point of view, that way he’s not simply evil for the sake of being evil. He actually has motivations to do the awful things he does.

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

Good, the logics of villains or side characters is what can make or break stories. (I note that both Matthew’s and mine interpretation works as intended, Solus is likely not doing anything incriminating considered as a common war situation.)

  • Jamming

@Larsson: Ever been Water-boarded? I have for E&E Training. Yes it is really stressing of a bodies instinctual activity of wanting free flow of air. However, it does not kill or demean the purpose of other interrogation techniques such as rape, beatings, and electrical applications.

They are still not as bad as Swedish Warcrimes, Jackie Arklöv, the Swedish oil company Lundin Petroleum, Harald Sundin who served at Treblinka Death Camp and participated in executions. He was still alive and living in Sweden in 2000. At least we were at war and only three terrorists received advance waterboarding techniques over what I experienced in training.

If your Norwegian there is not enough room to list their participation, with Quisling.

No one nation has the high ground on morality.

  • Alex

I have just read the entire archives between yesterday and today. I love the art, the story thus far, and am looking forward to seeing/reading more! You are officially +1 reader! Now off to see the extras =)

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

    Thanks, Alex!

I’m just posting to let you all know that due to holiday craziness and getting volume one to print, I’ll be taking a small break from updating. You can expect updates to resume regularly starting January 5th. I figure people are probably pretty preoccupied right now anyway.

However, I did add a new holiday incentive image for Top Web Comics! It’s pretty big, and took about as long as a new page anyway :P. Hope you like it, and have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

    -Holly

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

    @ Jamming:

A thoroughly confusing comment directed to me and your perception of my person, that doesn’t bear on what I commented on.

[However, in the Yule spirit, I provide a response below the cut.]

    —–

So you are describing torture, and are aware of it.

“However, it does not kill or demean the purpose of other interrogation techniques such as rape, beatings, and electrical applications.”

I don’t construe how you get from torture, which it is considered as, to interrogation techniques which is neither here nor there. (Another problem is that it is well known that torture doesn’t elicit reliable information, but what is invented by the torturers imagination. But again, OT.)

Then you list individual crimes inside and outside of wars. Yes, some of those would statistically follow from the systematic portraying of the enemy I discussed. And certainly we agree that it is a common characteristic of war not of nations, I said so much.

The reason to mention US was because it is current, well known, breaking the earlier efforts to abstain from torture (and so hazarding all war parties), and made by a “civilized” former superpower. There is nothing more to read into that, it was just an excellent, maybe the best, example of the point.

[Now China seems positioned to take over being the superpower large stick, _something that we may look forward to_ considering how badly US have started to behave. Egad, considering how bad China is on human rights!]

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

How ’bout in the ‘Yule Spirit,’ we drop the political talk for a while.

  • Jamming

    Out of respect for you…done.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

    Thanks, Jamming. :)

I added an FAQ section for anyone interested: http://terra-comic.com/faq.php

It just answers a few of the questions I get asked the most, and shows the process for working on the comic (I was asked to do this ages ago, sorry it took so long). I’ll probably add more to this section over time, check it out if you like! 😀

  • Jamming

    I got FAQ’d… :p

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Drew

lol that wasn’t directed at anyone in particular, so don’t worry. 😛

  • Matthew

Well, and I was about to bring up religion:-). I will ask it anyway:-P.

What can we know about the beliefs of Terra’s universe? Are the human’s religion is some form of a religion that we may know of? What do the Azatoth think about existence and about the ‘beginning of time’ (:-P)?
Or the comic is intentionally leaves those questions open to avoid certain arguements?

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

When you are talking about religion or politics in the comic that’s absolutely fine , I edited the FAQ to make that more clear.

I was only referring to bringing up real world politics or religion that has little or nothing to do with the comic, it can start arguments as it can be a delicate issue for some people. There’s forums for that kind of discussion (although most have rules against that sort of thing anyway for the exact same reasoning I have).

As for your question there are other religions in the galaxy, they aren’t fully developed but Drew and I have a basic idea of what they are going to be. Here’s some ideas we’ve had… I’m not sure if or when you will see any evidence of religion in the comic, but it’s good to have something developed just in case.

Vareliens (Eve’s race) believe in a unified existence, which every living creature becomes a part of when they die.

The Azatoth religion focuses on nature and the elements, kind of like Druids (Drew can probably expand on this a lot more than I can).

  • Jamming

I was joking, in as Ironic and Pun-ny Way (saying like “I been Facked”).

    Separately-
(to borrow from Spaceballs) Its funny because Agrippa doesn’t look Druidish.

  • Matthew

Thanks for the answer. I hope that we can read more about this in the Info section soon.
Can we know more about the military ranks? The basic idea I can see but what are the names of the ranks? How many soldiers do they command?

  • stormryder

What I ahve seen so far in this comic and particularly these last few pages, is a race bent on wholesale slaughter of all that come in their way.

Regardless of how you view “Lower Beings” versus “The Chosen”, killing the unarmed, wounded and those surrendering is still wrong on all levels.
A Warcrime is still a Warcrime.

  • Matthew

    @stormryder
I understand this, and in our universe you are absolutely right. But in a universe where the technology, the biology and physics works differently it would be irrational to say that the morality still works the same.
It is true that the humans are the same but what right do they (we) have to judge an other race with our morals? They have a different moral, and maybe by that moral Solus’ actions are understandable.

Not to mention that in our world there are different morals despite that we are the only sentient (?) species.

  • Jamming

In 300 years will morality be the same? 300 years ago spelling depended on the who was the teacher and grammer a thory, it was perfectly moral to own people, hang criminals for stealing bread, and no moral person would ever consider abortion. In fact the British fought a war over the killing of baby girls. Are morals and warcrimes absolute? Funny how things we consider absolute change in less than 20 years.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Drew

I know we all have not seen Solus very much but you have to keep in mind who Solus actually is. He doesn’t represent the entire Azatoth population plus keep in mind who his father is and why he gets away with certain events. The Azatoth people are not so different from humans with the way information is handled and who you are led to trust.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

@Matthew: About the ranks and other information, Drew and I wrote a lot of information down recently, so I’m going to be working on a big update for the info section.

However, right now I’m formatting the comic for print, so that has me pretty occupied. I was actually wondering what kind of bonus content people would like to see in the print version? I’m thinking exclusive artwork or something, is that the sort of thing people would like to see?

  • Bogey

Well… if it’s not too many pages, how about the original first chapter?

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

Unfortunately I didn’t keep some of the original PSDs so I can’t send it off to print, however I could add the original prologue to a section on the website if that was something people would like to see.

    Thanks for the suggestion! 😀

  • Bogey

I think it would be a shame not to show the original prologue somewhere. If you don’t use them as exclusive bonus content for the printed version, the website is definetley a good place for it ;).
The original prologue was what many readers first saw of your comic and what got them hooked. Reading it again will be interesting- but that might just be my sense of nostalgia talking. Of course, a chance to compare old and new prologue will be interesting, too. Most important though: You put a lot of work into those pages. Gathering digital dust on some hrddrive doesn’t do your work any justice. Let it be seen ;).

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

Agreed, I will make sure to put it up on the website in the gallery at some point.

Glad you enjoyed it 😀 I remember putting a lot of work into it back in ’09.
