Chapter: 5-Chapter Five

Wow, Grey has all the luck with the ladies.

  • http://hamstap85-studios.webs.com/ hamstap85

    cue the showing-up of her

  • http://feloniouspopes.blogspot.com Hann1bal

Actually, no. You have to be on the same ship with *three* of them.

  • Jamming

Poor Grey…At least this time its not him inserting his foot in mouth, it’s Rei.

    :)

  • Jamming

Not a complaint but an observation, is there a reason forGrey’s body posture in frame one? Also, I failed to type in my email correctly earlier, so who am I to talk about posture.

    😉

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

He’s walking, but the speech balloon covers that… so it kind of looks weird lol.

  • AKADivya

The Divya sees troubled waters ahead between Rei and Alexis. Two determined women who have negative feelings towards each others races on one ship? Yeah, not going over well. Unless of course poor Agrippa gets captured and they have to team to bust him outta prison together. I wonder if they could put potential dislikes aside long enough to be quiet? Wait, what? Why’d I come out of lurkdom again?

  • Stratus

Cue a street fight in 3…2…1…

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

Worse, she will probably have to train with him until she has proven her worth in the new gang.

Unless you can find someone at the same time stupid enough to take care of a hostile Azatoth female, and clever enough to not stumble over his/hers own feet. That is a mighty fine balance!

  • Matthew

    Nice! Very nice!

  • AKADivya

Mister Torbjörn I believe I have some words for you. Your lack of appropriate criticism reflects poorly on your character. I find your incessant prattle takes away any true constructive criticism you have mentioned in your comments. In the simplest sense you are a troll of the poorest quality. You have the right (until the creators yank that right) to say utter mean nonsense, and I won’t take it from you even if I could. However, I equally have the right to consider you a imbecile moron who has no taste what so ever. This webcomic is doing a wonderful job portraying a science fiction novel. It has a lot of common science fiction story elements and a well balanced addition of nontraditional elements. One must keep such elements together so that a person can be drawn into the adventure with a sense of, ‘Oh that could be me…’ as well as ‘Wow I never thought of that before…’ to keep them there. As a writer I know how very, very, very hard it is to come up with something completely original. Also, it is very, very, very easy to be influenced by previous stories. I find nothing wrong with that. Yes, you mention some traditional science fiction elements like it is a crime. But it isn’t a crime. So what if there are traditional elements? The true genius here is how it is told. Mind you, I am a writer not an artist. I couldn’t draw to save my life so I can’t honestly critic the art style but I do know that I enjoy the art style telling the story at hand. I do know that it isn’t a flawless masterpiece. There are parts in the story where I went, ‘Wait, what?’ and those parts could be worked on. However, you utterly failed to even mention those parts as problematic. I highly recommend you reflect upon your mean spirited failure at rude commentary and learn to grow up.

  • AKADivya

Wait, what? Why’d come I out of lurkdom for a troll?

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

??? Wonder what set that “incessant prattle” off?

[I would also normally be curious to know what “appropriate criticism” is, but considering the reaction to an idle comment, not really. :-D]

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

Um, wait. I didn’t really read that mass, but going away I saw “yank that right” and “I won’t take it from you”.

Threats, even or especially cloaked as passive-aggressive ones, are loathsome. But maybe you don’t need me to tell you that, once you have calmed down from whatever yanked your chain.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

“Appropriate criticism” is supposed to be fair, insightful and helpful to the creator as all artists strive to improve their craft. There have been plenty of readers on here who have given me great advice throughout the years, and I appreciate their help.

Most of what you have posted is more along the lines of trolling. Generally, when someone states that something is bad they provide reasons why, and so far a lot of your “crits” haven’t made much sense to me. However, I may have misinterpreted some of the things you have said on previous pages, I don’t really know.

  • Jamming

First, I am only going to comment once on this. Larsson you seem like an intelligent man but are you teachable? Passive-Aggressive is not the behavior you are describing. When you use “yank your chain” among older people is about pulling the chain of a raised toilet tank and among the younger like pulling a dog’s chain. You are either making the allusion that the person you are talking about is either a toilet or a dog. That is Passive-Aggressive, if that is not your intention it is better to not use such an idiom. The use of passive language or behavior as a tool of aggression.

Like I said, it seems you are an intelligent person. Sometimes a question about why something was done is better than saying you don’t like it. I wrote earlier something bothered me about Grey’s posture, I posed it as a question. Giving an artist a chance to explain their choices is fair. Constructive criticism is about a respectful conversation with the artist.

About are political differences, they are based upon our life experience and genetic outlook. We have much more in common as human beings than difference in political views.

  • AKADivya

The Divya should apologize for inciting drama. ^^;;;;; I am merely frustrated at incessant prattle that demeans a wonderful story telling experience. I like reading comments, putting in my two cents worth (I’ll give you a friendly heads up when I see a ‘wait, what?’ I haven’t had one in a long while) now that I’ve crawled my way out of lurkdom. Also, The Divya should clarify. On my good days I am very contented cat. I haven’t decided what I am on bad days but I am most certainly not a toilet or a dog.

  • Jamming

@ AKADivya I hope you don’t take offense at what I said, it was illustrative and not a comment on your person-hood. I feel neither are appropriate to you or what you have said. I enjoy your additions to the conversation, as I have enjoy some of Larsson’s additions. Each person can add their point of view without being dismissive of others is much better than the alternative.

I too have been mad at times and say intemperate things about Larsson (and I admit of others). That is not an excuse of my behavior merely an explanation that it is part of being human. This is not an effort to correct or comment on the correctness of any behavior, displayed here. How about we call the game for intemperate weather conditions interfering with the field of play. (Called on the account of rain)
Then next comic time we can start again and try to remain on target with helpful observations or questions.

  • Lazy Jesus

  • Lazy Jesus

Aww Holly your making me cry for being so kind

just never stop and dont listen to pricks your work is amazing

  • selvy

    Dirty dirty hummie! ahem~

xD I am actually intrigued as to how this develops for all parties involved. I love Agrippa’s smirk(?) at the end for some reason.

It’s probably just me; but I like your transitions between panels now. They seem to be much smoother and paced better. But I am probably just brain addled. <3

  • spas

heheh, i missed all the drama but i’m with divya on a possible cat fight on board. and i am in favor! perhaps they’ll work things out later, saving agrippa or some such, should he be captured. i like the idea!

  • Torbjörn Larsson, OM

Lovely. I make two rather bad jokes, without any personal connection whatsoever, and I am suddenly accused of trolling by several parties.

@ AKADivya: I now see you say you are an author. As an author even more than as a web commenter you should reinterpret others texts in the most positive manner available, you would know the problems involved. I wasn’t commenting on anything you said, but thought it was relevant, good and based my context jokes on that.

I commented on your threats, since it can’t be interpreted in such a positive manner and needs pointing out. We, society as well as individuals, can not and should not accept such (even if they of course are part of life).

@ Holly: I asked AKADivya as a reminder that I didn’t consider the long comment appropriate towards my short jokes, but fair enough.

I believe the same goes for all web commenters, interpreting positive, so for you as well. I have commented on this as a great comic, I believe initiated your realization and switch from a darker palette to a lighter (re “fair, insightful and helpful”).

That you consider “Most of what you have posted is more along the lines of trolling” is surprising to me. I comment mostly on science blogs, whence comes my “Order of the Molly” web popularity award; note you have to google “pharyngula order of molly” since scienceblogs is under attack. I am only mentioning it to show that a) I can or at least always try to back up my comments, this is my web MO, which is also reflected in the OM comments b) I have reflected and have reflections on my web commenting specifically.

I also comment on some other comics that interest me, and it has always been considered normal and welcome (ref the award, say).

As for misinterpretation, maybe you could consider that english isn’t my first language? It would help if you could give examples.

@ Jamming: I’m not sure what you mean by that I am not describing passive-aggressive, since you can read that out of what I said earlier, it suits. Nor if it is a discussion we should be having.

As for the “yank your chain”, see above, I had to google up some half remembered phrase that seemed to suit the situation for exact phrasing and somewhat normal usage frequency. My memory was likely prompted by AKADivya terminology.

For myself, I’m going to use the obligatory positive interpretation and behave like this was all based on misunderstanding.

  • http://www.terra-comic.com Holly

@Torbjörn: Let me make this clear, AKADivya never threatened you, they simply said if you continue to act in the manner that you do, they would not be surprised if you were banned by either Drew or myself.

You can take credit for my palette switch, if you want… but as I recall on page 127 I asked for everyone’s feedback, not just yours. It was actually prompted by someone on a forum stating ‘your comic is quite dark,’ after hearing that along with everyone’s response I thought it would be in my interests to make the comic brighter.

Also, as an artist, it would be extremely helpful to me when you have critiques about the art style/color palette/whatever to actually state why you think there is a problem and suggest possible solutions to fix it. Spamming is when you just say “this is bad” (or a long-winded “this is bad” in your case) with nothing to back it up.

And finally, I’m sure you post on plenty of other places on the internet, no one is questioning that. However, this is a community that has been built over the last two years, and I need you to respect other members and the creators of this comic, and not derail every page with your nonsensical comments.

When your critiques prove fair, and helpful, I’ll be listening.

  • http://darwincomics.spiderforest.com Tigershark06

OH yeah, she’s got a great attitude about all this….

  • Accursed91

Please don’t let any of the good guys die, I am growing quite attached to them… Which is probably not a good sign! XD

Anyway i am really enjoying this comic, heck I love this comic! 😀

  • http://www.terra-comic.com/ Holly

That’s great to hear! Thank you for commenting 😀
