Notes: Status Update

Sorry things have been quiet (again). Last week I was pretty sick and was bed ridden for a couple of days, as a result I’m losing more progress with the comic.

I figured I’d give you all an update on how things are going, as it’s been over 6 months since the diagnosis. I’m starting medication soon (it’s a shot that I take daily called Capaxone), it’s super expensive but is supposed to take potential flare ups down from once a year, to once every 5 years. I’m hoping that will help me feel some kind of control over my life, as right now every day is different for me. Some days my muscles in my legs are the only thing that bothers me, other days my vision is affected or I have zero energy and have a hard time breathing. It’s been pretty difficult, but I’m trying to stay positive as MS can have a relatively mild disease course (the opposite is also true, but I think it’s best to avoid dwelling on that, as no one really knows what the future has in store for them anyway).

I wanted to let you all know that I still care about the comic, I just feel like lately I have a huge weight on my shoulders preventing me from making any real progress with it. I’m going to do my best to get 2 pages up next week to help push us to the end of the volume (currently, we’re 4 pages away from the end of volume 2). Once I’m finished volume 2, I’ll likely be taking a month off to finish re-lettering the comic for print (I’m fixing some major inconsistencies in the artwork and fixing the horrible lettering job I did in 2010) and during that time I will also be prepping the upcoming chapter.

Thanks as always for your patience and understanding, I hope one day I can get back to updating the way I used to, nothing would make me happier.

Notes: Updates Resume Oct 30th / New Fanart / New Incentive Image for TWC

Hi everyone! I just wanted to announce that Terra will be updating again, starting Wednesday, Oct 30th (along with some Halloween artwork)! I’ve completed a nice amount of buffer during the last couple months and Drew and I have developed a lot of the story for the upcoming volumes. I’m really happy with how things are going; I haven’t felt this productive in years.

I’ve decided to forgo updating the same day every week in favor of just updating weekly on any given day (basically the page is ready when it’s ready, but I’m still going to try to keep it at a weekly rate). That way if I’m feeling fatigued or my symptoms act up I can have a bit more leeway with my work time. I’ll continue to post on facebook/RSS feeds when the pages are online, so hopefully this won’t cause anyone any confusion.

I know I sound really repetitive at this point, but I just want to say thanks again for all your patience. The last few months were the craziest time of my entire life, and it really helped to have such awesome readers supporting me during that time.

Lastly, we’ve received some wonderful new fanart of some of our characters by Chloeeh (see above). There’s also a new incentive image for Top Web Comics of one of the sketches I’ve done for Volume 3 (which starts with the beginning of Chapter Eight). Make sure check ’em out!

Notes: Another Status Update / Hiatus

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve posted any real status updates (aside from Facebook). This is the first time in a while I’ve been able to type on a computer.

As some of you may know I was in the hospital for about 10 days, I’ve been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I suppose it all makes sense now, what started with my wrist pain in 2011, then more recently the numbness in my leg along with my vision was all due to me living with MS and not knowing it. There were signs, like my focus on my work dropped sharply (hence my increasingly sloppy update schedule) I kept blaming myself for being lazy or unmotivated, but could never understand why I couldn’t get as much done while I was still putting in the same hours. It was like I was living in a haze.

I’m not sure what most of this means yet, as I’m still adjusting to the diagnosis, but it’s obviously something I have to live with for the rest of my life so I’m going to try and be as positive as possible. After some extensive treatment (wherein I had the plasma removed from my body and replaced over the course of 5 days, with another 5 days of steroids through an IV) I have noticed my vision is significantly better. Also, the prognosis for vision symptoms of MS is good, so I can expect it to keep improving for the next while. I’m only now noticing details that I haven’t seen in recent memory, which leads me to believe that my eyes were affected for longer than I originally thought.

As for now, the comic is going on hiatus, I’m not giving up and I refuse to regardless of this condition. I’m just not 100% there yet. I miss working on the comic more than anything, and engaging with all of you, I just need to take this time to rest, heal and to try to get back to normal.

Thanks again for your continued support, at least things make a lot more sense now.

Notes: Status Update 2

Hi guys, I really hate having to write this, I feel like I’m starting to sound like a broken record.

Last week I noticed that the eye sight in my left eye was looking pretty blurry, I thought it would just pass over a few days, but as the week went on the blurriness remained constant. I had to go for a couple (several hour long) appointments last week, and so far none of the doctors I’ve seen know the cause. I’m going in again for more tests today, which will take another few hours, so it looks like, between my eye and my back injury, back to back appointments going to be a constant thing in the next few weeks. The last thing I want to do is go on hiatus, but I can’t really ignore the reality of how this is all taking it’s toll on me. I just can’t commit to any kind of update schedule right now.

I’d love to tell you all when the next page will be online, but with so many unknowns at the moment (mainly how many more appointments I’ll end up going to) it’s really hard to give any definitive answers. Just trust that I am not quitting, or losing interest, this is purely medical and I honestly cannot wait to start working on the comic again.

Thanks for being so understanding throughout all this, I will keep you all posted as always, because right now, even I don’t know whats going on.

Notes: Page 248 delayed till Friday, Status Update

Hi everyone,

So, I’m injured… again, however this one a long time coming. I threw out my back a good 8 years ago during basic training, over the last couple months I’ve been getting into an intense exercise routine and as a result of taking on too much too fast I aggravated that injury. Now I have a pinched sciatic nerve (my entire left leg is numb because of this) and a slightly twisted spine. I have to go for 6 weeks of treatments to fix this issue, because I learned if I left it alone, I may not be walking by the fall.

Anyway, this has had a slight impact on my progress on this week’s page, but I don’t foresee having to take a break or anything, it just might be difficult to get as much done when I’m running around to appointments several times a week. I’m hoping to have page 248 up by Friday, but I really can’t make any promises right now. (**Edit 19th April 2013: Didn’t have enough time this week, the update will be up Wednesday**)

Thanks for your patience,

Notes: Page 236 has been added / Updates Resume Jan 2nd

Hi everyone!

This will be the last time I update before the new year; I’m going to be taking a week off, so there won’t be a new page next week. I’m trying to be realistic with our timetable, Drew and I are going to three separate Christmas dinners… so yeah, that week is pretty packed. 0_o

Updates will resume Jan 2nd, though I’ll likely put up a new vote incentive sometime before that (probably a preview of the upcoming page, nothing all that fancy). I’ve also been working on content for the website, particularly the Species section, so hopefully I can get that online sometime soon as well.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got. Drew and I want to wish you all Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year. Click the image above to see a new holiday themed image of the crew!

Notes: Week Long Hiatus

Hi guys, I’m going to have to go on hiatus for a week. I hate doing this, I know it can make it seem like forever between updates, but I really need to sort some things out. I’m kind of behind due to being sick last week, I basically worked the whole time and didn’t take many breaks throughout. I also had other work on my plate in addition to Terra.

I’ve talked with Drew and we both agree that I shouldn’t take on any additional projects in the near future, even if it is going to cost me money. I’m good with regular commissions like character designs or pinups, but I can’t commit to any larger projects as it just ends up burning me out and diverting my focus away from this comic, where it belongs. I guess I tend to overestimate how much I can handle, I need to do something about that 😛

I’m going to take a week off to get some work done at a less insane pace and clear my schedule so I have more time to devote to the comic and the website. In the meantime I’ve put up a full inked preview of the next page on Top Web Comics. See you all next Wednesday!

Notes: Weekly Updates return this Wednesday! Commissions are open!

After a few months of the monthly update schedule, I’ve decided that I have enough of a buffer to switch back to weekly updates. It was nice to build up some pages, but truth be told it wasn’t all that different than the amount of work that goes into a weekly update, and it was kind of boring waiting a month to show any progress in the story.

Anyway, the new page will be online this Wednesday. I’m going to try to rework the gallery a bit too. During this time I’ve done a lot of sketch work, and even some fully coloured images that I haven’t posted yet. Drew and I have also written some more content for the codex, so I’d like to get that on the website soon.

Lastly, I want to mention that I’ve put my portfolio website online, and am open for commissions once again. Prices range from $30.00 – 50.00 (black and white, digitally inked) and $50.00 – 75.00 (fully coloured). There is more info on the website here.

Notes: 2 New Pages online

Hello again everyone, I know things have been pretty quiet around here, I’m really sorry about that.

It seems like every month something will come up that prevents me from getting a proper update schedule going on, but, life is like that, it changes constantly, and it doesn’t slow down for anyone. This last year has been full of change for both Drew and I, starting when we purchased our first house (which is pretty much a never ending project, and partly responsible for my screwed up wrist lol), and then soon after we got engaged. These are both great things, but unfortunately not all change is of the happy variety.

Sadly, this last week my Grandma (Oma, more appropriately) passed away after battling with cancer for 4 years. She was one of the most amazing people I’ve had the privilege to have in my life, I will never forget her.

The last week I’ve been busy restoring some old photos for the funeral (which was this past Thurs.), so I couldn’t get the full update online today. All the pages are inked, and I’m trying a different colouring style more reminiscent of the earlier chapters. It’s quite a bit faster and I find the art looks cleaner and more polished than the digital painting style.

Anyway, that’s all I have for now. I really want everyone to know that Drew and I are as passionate about the comic as ever, it’s just been a really hectic year. Thanks for your patience, there will be more news to come soon.

Notes: 2 New Pages and a New Website!

Hello again! Our dog has been sick and I’ve been up for most of the night, so I’ll try to make this as coherent as possible. The monthly update is online, it’s only two pages for now, I’m going to try to get another page up in the next few days. I’ll try to make up for it next month. 😉

As you may have noticed the new website is up, and there are no longer two separate sites. It took a long time, but it’s all switched over. I like it a lot better this way, using wordpress took some getting used to, but it is actually a lot faster and easier to update than static html pages. If anyone notices any issues with the site, such as missing images and/or broken links, let me know and I’ll fix it straight away! 😀

Also, all the Internet Explorer issues are now non-existent! You can finally view the site normally.

Notes: 2 New Pages!

The rest of the pages for July’s update are online! We also got reviewed by the Science Fiction Research Association (SFRA), click the link and scroll down to issue 299 (it’s a downloadable PDF) if you would like to check it out, it was a very enjoyable read!

Thanks for all your patience and well wishes! Drew is feeling much better 😀

Notes: 2 New Pages! More to come soon!

Hi everyone. I’m going to keep this short because I’m pretty exhausted right now. I’ve posted part of the monthly update (the first two pages), I’m going to need another couple days to finish off the last two due as the last week has been pretty crazy.

Drew got in an accident at work, he passed out due to heat exhaustion and suffered a mild concussion, so I’ve spent a good chunk of last week looking after him (you have to watch people who have hit their head, it’s pretty crucial). Lately, it has just been one thing after another, so it’s been hard to devote as much time as I need to working on the comic.

That said, the other pages are going well, and I should have them done in a couple days. Drew and I recently purchased a new macbook pro, and I’ve had a hell of a time trying to calibrate the colour on the laptop and the Cintiq. I think I’ve fixed it, but it still sometimes seems a bit off to me (particularly the purples and green/blues), either way, I hope everything looks okay in this update, I spent quite a bit of time adjusting the new equipment, I even had to redraw part of Page. 219 in the process, maybe I’m going through a bit of an artist’s block. 😛

Anyway, thanks for being so patient, I will post another update to the RSS feed when the new pages are added!

Notes: 4 new pages and a gallery update.

Woo hoo! Update time! I actually managed to get a lot done this month, the pages, some artwork, and a ton of script work. Even though it is technically the same content as updating once a week, I found not having a weekly deadline helped me space out my work and I became more efficient with my use of time. So, I’m deciding to keep this up for a bit, the updates will be on the 15th of every month (I know I have to update the website, which still says every Weds.). It’ll average out at around 4 pages, maybe more, depending on what else I have on the go at the time. This may mean more waiting, but it’s really the same frequency of pages that it was before, and it will mean more content for the website.

As for the gallery update, I’ve added some new images and some old ones I have been meaning to put online. I started painting all the main characters (starting with the humans, then I’m going to have a go at the aliens next month) in a more realistic style, I found this to help distinguish their individual features, which will aid my line art in the future. It’s a pretty fun exercise, and I’m going to try to work on something new each month to try and practice different skill sets.

I should note that I realize the incentive image is still old and needs to be replaced. As I’ve said before I’d much rather update the content of the website than to waste time trying to bait people for votes (I could go on a whole rant about vote incentives, but I’ll spare you, lol). I appreciate every vote I get, but unless I have some extra sketches lying around, I feel my time/effort would be better used elsewhere.

Lastly, a big thank you to all of our readers that have been so supportive, you guys are awesome!

P.S. Did anyone see Prometheus yet? I did and I loved it, so exciting to see dark, adult Sci-Fi in the theatres (in IMAX 3D no less :D). I know some people were peeved because it left a lot of questions unanswered, but isn’t that part of the mystery of Science Fiction? Damn, I want to do some fan art now…
